Reasons the product is recalled

A small proportion of installed units (less than 1%) may experience component failure on the printed circuit board. In that event, the compressor may exhibit extreme vibration which may in turn lead to a fracture of the compressor pipework and a failure of the total heat pump module if left unattended.

The hazards to consumers

Under a rare sequence of events if a heavily vibrating heat pump is left unattended, a rupture of the compressor is possible although unlikely, and an injury might occur if someone was in close proximity to the compressor at the time of the rupture. There have been no known injuries and this recall is being undertaken as a precaution.

What consumers should do

If consumers notice that their heat pump water heater is demonstrating short bursts of extreme vibration accompanied by a very loud hammering noise, they should turn the unit off at the switchboard and immediately ring 1800 063 018 to arrange a service call to repair the unit.

All consumers should confirm if their Rheem or Everhot Heat Pump water heater is one that is covered by this voluntary recall. If it is, they should register their unit for service at www.heatpumpwaterheater.com.au from 1 December 2010 or call toll free 1800 063 018 immediately to ensure Rheem is in possession of their details. Rheem will be arranging to undertake on-site service modifications to all affected units at no charge. Rheem will also be writing to all known owners of the affected units to arrange a service visit and on-site modifications.
