Reasons the product is recalled

The BIOS software (Basic Input/Output System) installed in the affected notebooks incorrectly regulates the operation of the power adapter to the effect that in certain circumstances the adapter will overheat.

The hazards to consumers

In certain circumstances the power adapter may in approximately 10 minutes reach a temperature of up to 71 degrees celsius. This temperature is approximately 10% higher than the usual maximum operation temperature for the adapter. The circumstances under which the adapter may overheat are:
- the adapter is engaged in the notebook and switched on;
- the notebook battery is fully charged; and
- the notebook is operating an application with high energy use, most typically a gaming application.

What consumers should do

(a) Contact Acer’s website www.acer.com.au and following the directions. Select the ‘Service and Support’ link at top of page; or
(b) Telephone Acer’s call centre on 1300 365 100 where directions will be given.
At either contact point, consumers will be given instructions for the correction of the BIOS software which will completely rectify the defect. Alternatives for correction are:
- Download a “patch” from Acer’s website;
- Acer will dispatch a patch on a CD to the customer;
- Return the notebook to Acer where the defect will be rectified.
