Product safety recall: Music Zone Mr Squirrel 8 Scale Happy Xylophone

Published

NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts is urging consumers to check if they may have purchased a potentially dangerous children’s toy imported and sold through The Reject Shop stores nationally.

Mr Roberts said NSW Fair Trading discovered the toy, the Music Zone Mr Squirrel 8 Scale Happy Xylophone, on sale at The Reject Shop in Port Macquarie.

“During a routine visit to businesses in Port Macquarie, NSW Fair Trading officers examined the xylophone and identified a number of small parts that could be dangerous to small children if they became detached,” he said.

Independent testing by Test Research, an accredited test laboratory, confirmed that the toy failed the mandatory test requirements of the Australian Standard for toys, AS/NZS 8124.1:2002 Safety of toys part 1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties.

“NSW Fair Trading notified The Reject Shop of the failure of the toy and it was removed from sale immediately. My department then negotiated a voluntary recall of the toy with The Reject Shop.

“The Reject Shop has set up a National Toll Free number (1800 633 886) for consumers to call with any questions or concerns.

“The Reject Shop has advised that 7,083 units of the toy were sold nationally between November 2010 and May 2011, with 3,283 supplied in NSW” Mr Roberts said.

The Reject Shop has arranged for details of the national recall to be published in the Canberra Times on Monday 20 June and the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Melbourne Herald Sun, Brisbane Courier Mail, Adelaide Advertiser, Perth West Australian and the Hobart Mercury on 21 June.

Mr Roberts said details of the recall will also be registered on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s recall website.

“The Reject Shop will also place copies of the recall notice in each of its stores and a notice will be placed on the company’s website and Facebook page.

“NSW Fair Trading is continuing its investigation into the supply of this toy and appropriate enforcement action would be taken upon completion of the investigation” Mr Roberts concluded.
