NSW: Fair Trading Checks Safeguard Show Patrons

Published

New South Wales Fair Trading has given a clean bill of health to this year’s Royal Easter showbags, after completing checks on 322 showbags supplied by seven exhibitors.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said no toys or novelty items required removal this year, testament to the excellent relationship developed over many years between Fair Trading and the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and suppliers.

Fair Trading also attended the Newcastle Show on 1 March, the Castle Hill show on 8 March and the Camden Show on 15 March 2013.

These shows are the lead up events to the Sydney Easter Show and no unsafe products were detected at these shows either.

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts said: “This is a great result and shows NSW Fair Trading’s targeting of the suppliers of dangerous novelty toys and items is working.”

Fair Trading product safety unit investigators will continue random checks throughout the show, from tomorrow until Wednesday 3 April, checking the showbag pavilion as well as products offered for sale and as prizes.

Mr Stowe said Fair Trading had today also inspected 62 gas installations at mobile catering vendors on the showgrounds.

Seven vendors were found with serious safety defects that required rectification by a gasfitter.

These included cylinders not mounted on a solid base and cylinders stored adjacent to ignition sources.

The RAS and their onsite plumber were notified of the issues and a follow up inspection of the vendors will be conducted tomorrow.

Mobile catering vendor checks will continue throughout the show to ensure safety is maintained around these installations.

Inspections of electrical appliances will commence tomorrow and continue throughout the show.

“Checks on any electrical products being sold throughout the showgrounds preclude the sale of unapproved and potentially dangerous articles,” he said.
